Legend has it that the “404: Page Not Found” message dates back to the 1980’s when the World Wide Web’s central database was located in the fourth room on the fourth floor of a building in Switzerland. There, actual humans manually located files that were misnamed during a request and transferred them over the network to the person who made the request.
