In 1986, Hasbro wanted to sell more Transformers toys. Their solution was to make a movie that killed off many of the existing Transformers and replaced them with a new generation of characters. It turned out not to be the best marketing decision, but the movie itself has stood the test of time and is arguably more popular today than it was when it was originally released.
