Your dose of the 80s and 90s

Hello friends,

If you’re not already aware, 80s and 90s culture scored a big win in the sports world. Breakdancing (or ‘break’) will be a competitive sport for the 2024 Olympics in Paris!

I repeat: breakdancing will be an Olympic sport!

Just when I think the world is nothing but gloom and doom, something happens to restore my faith in humanity.

Basics

There are three basic elements of break: top rock, down rock and freeze.

Top rock are all the moves performed while standing.

Down rock are the moves performed on the floor.

Freeze is when the performer suddenly stands still in a unique pose.

The combination of these elements forms the base of a break routine.

Format

The Olympic Games is keeping it real as each breaker (we can call them athletes now) has a one-on-one throw down with an opponent.

Essentially, it’s a dance off.

Judgement

There will likely be five judges, each rating the breakers conducting the throw downs on the following six criteria:

• Creativity

• Personality

• Technique

• Variety

• Performativity

• Musicality

When and Where?

The Olympic break event will occur over two days on August 9 and 10, 2024. Appropriately, the throw downs will take place at the Place de la Concorde, which is a major public square in Paris.
