90s Sailor Ravers

06 • 13 • 22

Hello friends,

As some of you might know, I was in the Navy in the late 90s on a ship called the USS Blue Ridge. Being the 7th Fleet admiral’s command-and-control flagship, we’d spend much of our deployment time in exotic ports throughout the APAC region so the admiral could show off his ship and have parties on the deck. Even our home port was exotic being just south of Tokyo.

Well, if you get a large enough group of young men together in the late 90s, you’re bound to have a large subset of trance dancing ravers, and many of my shipmates were such. Not being a raver myself, it had to have been among the goofiest subcultures I’d ever seen (and I grew up in the 80s). Here are some of the weirdest things I remember about ravers in the late 90s.

JNCO Jeans

These jeans made bellbottoms looks like skinny jeans. No kidding. You could smuggle a small group of hostess bar girls in these things. While I’m sure my raver friends probably though they would look cool at the rave, the jeans usually just got dirty, damp and frayed at the bottom making the guys look more like transients.

Sit Ubu Sit

What they thought their JNCO jeans would look like.

What their JNCO jeans actually looked like.

Pacifiers and Baby Accessories

While military grooming regulations prevented the raver sailors from the ideal hairstyles of “ramen head” or frosted tips, they still found a way to look completely ridiculous. Part of the raver attire was a pacifier worn around the next. Yup, a pacifier. Like, the baby thing. Moreover, they often sucked on the baby pacifier. Yes, grown military war sailors were sucking on pacifiers out in town like Maggie Simpson. The juvenility of this was only exacerbated by the brightly colored, childish accessories they wore. It was a site indeed.

Glow Sticks

In the 80s, I though glow stick were cool because that’s what bad asses like Rambo used to get around in dark places like an enemy cave. Then, the late 90s arrived and they became a rave dance toy. I’d often see my pals practice their glow stick dance moves even outside the clubs. According to my buddies, the glow sticks looked awesome when they were dancing around high on Exstacy. I guess the light would streak around while they were in an “E” induced euphoria.

I had a lot of shipmates kicked out of the Navy for popping positive on random drug tests.

Do you remember any other strange rave fashions from the 90s? Were you a raver yourself? Are my now middle-aged pals embarrassed looking back? Let me know at info@the80sand90s.com.

Thanks for raving with me.
