Hello friends, As some of you might know, I was in the Navy in the late 90s on a ship called the USS Blue Ridge. Being the 7th Fleet admiral’s command-and-control flagship, we’d spend much of our deployment time in exotic ports throughout the APAC region so the admiral could show off his ship and have parties on the deck. Even our home port was exotic being just south of Tokyo. Well, if you get a large enough group of young men together in the late 90s, you’re bound to have a large subset of trance dancing ravers, and many of my shipmates were such. Not being a raver myself, it had to have been among the goofiest subcultures I’d ever seen (and I grew up in the 80s). Here are some of the weirdest things I remember about ravers in the late 90s. JNCO JeansThese jeans made bellbottoms looks like skinny jeans. No kidding. You could smuggle a small group of hostess bar girls in these things. While I’m sure my raver friends probably though they would look cool at the rave, the jeans usually just got dirty, damp and frayed at the bottom making the guys look more like transients.
